90s Babies: Here’s the Biggest Celebrity Gossip From The Year You Were Born

Ah, the 90s. Titanic, the Spice Girls, Sex in the City, Tamagotchi, and the Game Boy - just some of the things that made our decade the best. But what else was big in the 90s was celebrity culture, and for the first time, we became well and truly obsessed with celeb gossip.

90s babies rejoice: we’ve rounded up the biggest celeb gossip from the year you were born.

1990: Madonna’s Too Raunchy for MTV

In 1990, Madonna was at the top of her game and released Justify My Love from her first greatest hits compilation album. The corresponding music video, however, was simply too raunchy for music channel MTV, who banned the star’s track from appearing on its network. “If we’re going to have censorship, let’s not be hypocrites about it. Let’s not have double standards,” Madonna said in the same year, rightfully calling out MTV for its sexist views.

1991: Pee-Wee Herman’s Pee-Wee

This piece of gossip is a little unsavory, so if you’re eating your popcorn you might want to come back later. In 1991, Paul Reubens, who is responsible for the comedy character, was caught in an adult theater getting carried away with himself and was arrested for indecent exposure. Pee-Wee is a cult phenomenon today with a hugely popular Twitter account.

1992: Sinead O’Connor Rips Up The Pope

Okay, this one isn’t as gossipy as it seems. The Nothing Compares 2 U singer shocked the world back in 1992 when she ripped up a picture of the Pope on live TV when singing War by Bob Marley. She later went on to tell fans she was trying to draw light to the child abuse crisis in the Roman Catholic Church but at the time it seriously damaged her reputation.

1993: Michael Jackson Accusations

The king of pop entered into one of the world’s most well-publicized scandals back in 1993, after he was accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy at his Neverland ranch. MJ later agreed to pay a $20 million out-of-court settlement, but a new documentary has shed light on the music icon’s personal life once more, with new accusations from Michael’s young friends.

1994: Anna Nicole Smith Gets Married

Another major piece of celebrity gossip from the 1990s happened when Anna Nicole Smith married an 89-year-old oil baron named J. Howard Marshall II. Why? Well, we’re sure she was truly, madly, deeply in love with J, and the fact he had half a billion in the bank had nothing to do with it. He died a year after their marriage, and Anna hit the headlines once again - albeit as a richer lady.

1995: O.J. Simpson Trial

Toy Story became the world’s first fully animated film when it was released in 1995, but that wasn’t the celebrity gossip you came here for. The sensational televised trial of ex-football player O.J. Simpson was the biggest story of the year, dominating gossip pages and the TV schedules. Indeed, more than 150 million tuned in to see the jury’s final decision, making it one of the most-watched television moments in history, albeit for the wrong reasons.

1996: Ellen DeGeneres Comes Out

Today she’s one of the world’s biggest talk show stars, rightfully taking over from Oprah, but back in 1996, she made the brave decision to come out as a lesbian. The comedian went on to star in television shows before launching a standup career, but it wasn’t until 2003 when The Ellen DeGeneres Show made her the star she is today. The chatshow, featuring gossipy interviews with many of the world’s biggest stars, has aired more than 2,500 episodes.

1997: Diana, Princess of Wales Conspiracies

Shortly after the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales, rumors began to circulate as to whether it was an inside job - and to this day, conspiracies and celebrity gossip remain rife. Of course, all wrong-doing has been ruled out, but it’s certainly an interesting story…

1998: George Michael Arrested At Public Toilet

The late music legend George Michael has been involved in his fair share of celebrity scandals throughout his career but in 1998, the star was arrested in Los Angeles for a “lewd act” in a public toilet. The singer was forced to come out as gay, and he later went on to make light of the incident in the music video for his single Outside, featuring public toilets.

1999: Marilyn Manson Drama

Two students murdered twelve of their classmates and one teacher at Columbine High School back in 1999 in an abhorrent act of violence. When authorities tried to piece together the senseless act, some people blamed Marilyn Manson - as his music was a fixture in the two students’ lives. Of course, Marilyn was innocent, but it sparked a debate about violence and young people’s access to inappropriate lyrics, leading some to change their songs.
